What Is Christmas In April?

Christmas in April is an annual one-day blitz to repair and rehabilitate the homes of low-income, elderly and disabled people. From a single program founded in Midland, Texas, it has spread throughout the country, with 135 programs now serving 328 cities. It unites people of all faiths and walks of life in an effort to assist people in need. The event happens on the last Saturday in April with a rain date of the following Saturday.


Why Is Christmas In April needed?

For many low-income, elderly or disabled homeowners in Vernon, properly maintaining a home can be an impossible task. Many of our neighbors cannot provide themselves with even the basic necessities we take for granted.


What repairs are done?

Christmas in April does repairs in the following areas: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, plastering, painting, glazing, weather-stripping, locksmithing as well as trash removal and cleaning.


Who is eligible for Christmas In April Services?

Low-income, elderly and disabled homeowners, who are not able to do the work themselves, are eligible for services.


How are Christmas In April homes selected?

Various churches, synagogues, community organizations, and human service groups refer houses to Christmas in April for consideration. The goal in Rockville/Vernon this year is ten homes.


What are the responsibilities of the homeowners who are being helped?

Homeowners who are able-bodied are expected to work alongside volunteers on Christmas In April day. While it is not always possible, homeowners have found other special ways to make volunteers feel welcome and appreciated, some providing a special snack or lunch, words of appreciation, or notes of thanks.


Who can volunteer for Christmas In April?

Anyone sixteen and older can be a Christmas In April volunteer. Volunteers come from churches and synagogues, businesses, schools, community service organizations, corporations, associations, and interested individuals. They represent all professions. Volunteers do not need to be skilled at home repairs, but any skills will be well utilized. To inquire about Christmas In April Rockville/Vernon volunteer opportunities, call 875-9498.


Where do the skilled tradespeople come from?

Numerous community-minded skilled individuals and companies donate skilled help, as well as trucks and tools, to participate in Christmas In April. Without such skilled workers, many of the repairs cannot be undertaken.


Who pays for Christmas In April repairs?

All repairs are paid for by Christmas In April. Homeowners are not expected to pay for any services provided.


Who sponsors Christmas In April?

Christmas In April receives funds from churches, synagogues, businesses, corporations, foundations, service organizations, clubs, associations and individuals. Building materials are also accepted as donations.


How do I make a pledge of support and to whom do I write my check?

Thank you for volunteering to help rebuild our neighborhood one house at a time. Here is the agenda for the day:

  1. Please report to Center 375 on Saturday April 26, 2003 at 7:30 a.m. The rain date will be Saturday, May 3, 2003 at 7:30 a.m. You may park in the lot located behind the building by Vernon Public Works. Please bring work gloves, paint brushes, and scrapers from home if you can.

  2. At Center 375 report to the check-in table that corresponds to your assigned work site number. The site number will be displayed in red above the check-in table.

  3. At check-in you will be given an official Christmas in April T-shirt, hat and map to your site.

  4. Enjoy a delicious breakfast courtesy of our many supporters. After a brief opening message to the group, you will be dismissed to your work site. Please try to carpool if possible.

  5. Work. Work. Work. Each site has a house captain who will give you your assignment. Refreshments and Lunch will be delivered to your work site for you.

  6. Remember to come back to Center 375 when your site is complete. Our Christmas in April picnic crew will provide you with plenty of food, entertainment, and door prizes as a thank you for donating your valuable time.
